On your marks, get set, go!

You just began the race of your life. Every time you achieve a goal, you’ll be onto the next; first adulthood, then relationships, career, family, college savings, adventures & vacations, mortgage, fancy material objects, and so on. Do you realize that most people spend their lives racing towards one goal, only to get there and feel a moment (or few) of fulfillment, and move on?

It’s pretty wild. If you don’t stop and think about it, you may forget to notice it’s about the journey, rather than the endpoint. It’s about ‘playing’ the game, not winning it. Sure, it feels great every time you’re on top in life, achieve a goal, and fulfill part of a dream you’ve created for yourself.

Yet, along the way, how many moments did you forget to pay attention? How many times were there opportunities to make your day just a bit more fun? When you look back a decade, which moments do you remember and which look like a blur? How about when you look back two decades?

If you’re anything like me, you want to have fun with your life. You want to enjoy yourself. You want to spend time with family and friends, and you want to make an impact.

It’s the fun you’ll remember, or you’ll remember the other extreme in sadness/trauma. When you add more fun to your life, you’ll shift the ratio of fun:sadness in favor of fun, and you’ll begin to remember more of your life in a positive way.

Plus, you’ll always be winning. You won’t have to wait for a moment of triumph — defined by a goal based upon human consumption and societal values, rather than inherent purpose and your own core values — in order to enjoy your life. The celebration never ends, and the low moments become a small fraction of time; seemingly unimportant.

Today’s thought exercise:

Write down 3 ways to make your life more fun within the next 24 hours, and from here on out.

Now, go on. Make them happen!
