Ocean

Ocean.

The ocean is magical:

  • Look at the ocean to gain perspective.
  • Hear waves crash and feel relaxed.
  • Smell the ocean and bring back memories from childhood, or earlier.
  • Taste saltwater on your lips and lose your sense of time in play.
  • Touch the water and become centered, instantly.

In the absence of the fear of drowning, what is it about this magical force of nature that seems to produce a universal response across people from all walks of life and geographical areas around the world? Or, if you do have a fear response when you see or touch the ocean, what does that tell you about your lens on life?

Children — and adults alike — laugh and play, giggle, and run around splashing in the waves. Games like beach volleyball, frisbee, and soccer become desirable as soon as our feet hit the sand. Sports like fishing, kayaking, surfing, and paddle boarding seem like the best way to spend our time. Movement — and relaxation — become center points, and they seem effortless.

Ask yourself — what other environments produce a child-like reaction in me? Then, consider how you can incorporate them into your daily life; activities that make you want to move, play, laugh, relax, and have fun.

How would your life change if you incorporated a shortcut to fun — and acting like a child — into your every day? Would you need more than a few minutes per day to completely change your perspective on life and whether or not it’s meant to be enjoyed?

Would you be healthier if you made it a point to have fun every day? Would you smile more? Would stress — and other life matters — seem so important?

And, with whom would you spend more time?

Many times, we complicate health. We talk about all of the details, but we forget the big picture: have fun with your life.

Generally speaking, when we center on enjoying our lives, the rest falls into place. For example, it’s not much fun being overweight, out of breath, depressed or serious all the time, or worried about what is to come, instead of enjoying what is.

Is it too much to ask to have fun, even if it’s just 15 minutes, every single day?

Today’s thought exercise: spend a few minutes choosing one of your favorite activities that gets you outside and enjoying your life. Then, incorporate ‘fun’ into your every day.

If it’s winter dress warm, get outside and go for it. Snow is tons of fun. Rain can be too. Sunshine warming your skin — even if through your coat — is a lovely feeling. Feeling wind hit your back can be bone-chillingly cold, or it can be a feeling of freedom and letting go. You get to decide, and most importantly, you get to decide how you spend your life.

Don’t let society win, telling you life is hard, not meant to be enjoyed, and a constant grind. You get to win. You can win. You always have the choice, no matter how dire or grim the circumstances may seem.

I believe in you, and I’m so proud of you for taking the first step to enjoy your life more, beginning today.

Sent to you with love, compassion, and gratitude,

Kareem
